Nato nel 1943 a Lione, Dufourt studia filosofia, composizione ed elettroacustica a Ginevra. Nella sua carriera raggiunge importantissimi traguardi, ricevendo i maggiori riconoscimenti in Francia, in Germania e negli Stati Uniti. La molteplicità dell’attività intellettuale di Dufourt, non solo compositore affascinante e inconfondibile, è impressionante. Filosofo, saggista e teorico, ha scritto numerosi libri di analisi dell’evoluzione musicale, filtrata attraverso la storia della società. Con la pittura, instaura un rapporto fecondo. Alcune celebri tele di Tiepolo, Giorgione, Rembrandt, Bruegel, Poussin e altri accendono la sua fantasia e suggeriscono trame compositive, ma la sua musica non è pittoresca descrizione, non evoca le forme e le figure, ma la luce, la prospettiva e il colore attraverso il tempo.

 Il Festival di Milano Musica 2010 presenterà, in sei concerti, le più significative composizioni del maestro francese, da Erewhon del 1972 per 150 strumenti a percussione, eseguito da Les Percussions de Strasbourg, a Le Cyprès blanc per viola e orchestra del 2004, in prima esecuzione italiana, con la Filarmonica della Scala diretta da Frédéric Chaslin e la viola di Gérard Caussé al Teatro alla Scala. Attraverso un arco creativo di trent’anni si seguirà la trasformazione dello stile di Dufourt, dalla violenta verticalità di Antiphysis alle distese sconfinate sempre più cariche di tensione di L’Afrique d’après Tiepolo. All’apice si pone Saturne per 22 strumenti ed un complesso apparato elettronico, opera emblematica sul tempo pervasa di malinconia che immerge l’uditore in un’esperienza profonda della durata.
Ogni programma dedicato a Dufourt comprende inoltre opere di compositori della scuola spettrale, quali Grisey, Murail e Levinas, accanto a tre prime esecuzioni assolute di Pisati, Perezzani e Bulfon, commissioni di Milano Musica.

Accanto al Festival Dufourt ci saranno quattro concerti dedicati ai “Percorsi di musica d’oggi 2010”: il celebre Quintetto Bibiena presenterà opere di Ligeti, Francesconi, Berio, oltre ai giovani Cassinelli e Corrado; ritornerà a Milano Musica lo Scharoun Ensemble dei Berliner Philharmoniker con due straordinari programmi: due prime esecuzioni commissionate da Milano Musica ad Ambrosini e a Cappelli, accostate a un bellissimo ciclo per voce e strumenti di Mosca e alla riproposta di Scene da un romanzo di Kurtág; il giorno successivo, con protagonista Fanny Ardant, verrà rappresentato il capolavoro di Michael Jarrell Cassandre, monodramma per recitante, ensemble ed elettronica su testo di Christa Wolf, un violento melologo contro la guerra e sulla condizione femminile. Il concerto sarà dedicato ad Amnesty International.

Conclude il Festival, il 7 novembre al Teatro alla Scala, la prima esecuzione a Milano di una novità di Wolfgang Rihm per un insolito organico: quattro archi (Quartetto Arditti) e quattro voci (Hilliard Ensemble) accanto a musiche rinascimentali a cappella.

Un nutrito numero di “approfondimenti e variazioni”, a ingresso libero, illustreranno i temi del Festival.

Dufourt (Lyon, 1943) studies philosophy, composition and electro-acoustics in Genève. During his career he reaches extremely important goals, receiving major acknowledgements in France, Germany and United States. The multiplicity of Hugues Dufourt’s intellectual activity, not only as a fascinating and original composer, is wondrous. Philosopher, essayist and theorist, he has written numerous books on musical evolution, filtered by the history of society. In his music, he develops a fertile interaction with painting. Many famous pictures by Tiepolo, Giorgione, Rembrandt, Bruegel, Poussin and others have lit his fantasy and suggested compositional wefts, but his music is never a picturesque description, it doesn’t conjure up forms and figures, but light, perspective and colour through time.

 The Milano Musica Festival 2010 will present, in six concert, the most significant compositions by the French maestro, from Erewhon (1972) for 150 percussion instruments, performed by Les Percussions de Strasbourg, to Le Cyprès Blanc (2004), for viola and orchestra, performed for the first time in Italy by the Orchestra Filarmonica della Scala, directed by Frédéric Chaslin and Gérard Caussé’s solo viola at Teatro alla Scala. Through the creative arch of thirty years, we will follow the development of Dufourt’s style, from the violent verticality of Antiphysis, to the endless wastes charged with growing tension of L’Afrique d’après Tiepolo. At the acme we will find Saturne, for 22 instruments and a complex electronic apparatus, emblematic work centred on the concept of time and swept in a melancholy that overwhelms the listener with a profound experience of duration. Every program dedicated to Dufourt will also comprehend works by composers of the Spectral School as Grisey, Murail, and Levinas, standing by three absolute first performances by Pisati, Perazzani and Bulfon, commissioned by Milano Musica.

Running parallel to the Dufourt Festival, there will be four concerts dedicated to the “Contemporary Music Paths 2010”: well-known Quintetto Bibiena will present works by Ligeti, Francesconi, Berio and young composers Cassinelli and Corrado; we will also welcome the return to Milano Musica of the Berliner Philharmoniker’s Scharoun Ensemble with two extraordinary programs: two first performances commissioned by Milano Musica to Ambrosini and Cappelli, aside to a beautiful Mosca’s cycle for voice and instruments and to the re-proposition of Kurtág’s Scene from a novel; the following day, with the extraordinary participation of Fanny Ardant as protagonist, the Piccolo Teatro Strehler will guest the performance of Michael Jarrell’s masterpiece Cassandre, monodrama for performer, ensemble and electronics based on the novel by Christa Wolf, a violent melologue against war and on the women condition. <br>The concert will be dedicated to Amnesty International.

At the conclusion of the Festival, on November the 7th at Teatro alla Scala, there will be a first performance in Milan of a new piece by Wolgfang Rihm for an unusual setting: four strings (Quartetto Arditti) and four voices ( Hilliard Ensemble), aside to a selection of renaissance music a cappella.

A numerous set of “in-depth examinations and variations”, with free entrance, will illustrate the Festival themes.

All concerts will be recorded and broadcast as usual, by Rai Radio tre.
