MUSIC AS AN INSTRUMENT FOR DEVELOPMENT

Since 2010 Milano Musica is the Italian representative for Music Fund, International NGO based in Belgium with the aim to promote donations and reparations of instruments to send in developing or in conflict countries. Music Fund, also, sets up repair workshops and trains luthiers in these countries in order to assure local know-how for the maintenance of the instruments. After the success of Costruire con la Musica, the biggest collecting campaign in Europe (more than 730 instruments donated) Milano Musica, in a perspective of a long-term commitment, promoted workshops and internships with luthiers in Marocco, Mozambique and in Cremona (Italy) along with workshops for sound engineers in Maputo (Mozambique), with the aim to support the development of local professional knowledge in order to insure the overall sustainability of the entire project.

Music Fund has been recognized by the European Commission, DG Development and Cooperation, for its specific working method, and nominated “Best Practice in Culture and Development”.

One of the mottos of Music Fund is “Give music a chance”. The motivation of the founders aroused when they noticed a concrete need of music instruments in some specific areas. By providing these instruments, Music Fund has simply given people the chance to make music. To make music, one needs instruments, but also people who ensure the maintenance of these instruments.

It became very quickly clear to the organization that music could be considered as an instrument for development. The chance to make music offers development opportunities: first to the young people who play music, to the young people who are trained as repair technicians – not to mention the personal, social and economical progress that this may represent for them -, but also to the whole of communities to which they belong.

The main focus of Music Fund is on the musical instruments: Music Fund collects, checks and repairs musical instruments, and donates them to its partner schools. It also organizes workshops and training programs in order to teach the students how to repair instruments. The workshops take place in the regions where the partner schools are located, while the longer instrument repair training programs are held in international workshops and schools.
